Bad breath and stained teeth are unappealing, but many pet owners aren’t aware that these may be symptoms of serious gum disease. Without proper dental care for your pet they can develop gingivitis, which is plaque build-up on a cat or dog’s teeth and gums that may appear red and swollen. This can progress to further oral diseases such as periodontitis and loss of teeth.
Your veterinarian will assess each tooth to determine whether your pet will require antibiotics before and after the procedure. For a simple dog teeth cleaning, including a scale and polish, antibiotics are generally not prescribed. Your veterinarian will scale microscopic calculus from your pet’s teeth above and below the gumline with an ultrasonic scaler. They will then polish the teeth to prevent re-attachment of plaque. However, if any teeth cannot be saved, extractions may be necessary and in some cases, gum surgery is required to close the holes left behind when a tooth is extracted with dissolvable stitches used for this procedure.
